Every few months Instagram does something new that blows me out of the water. While the algorithm still exists and you’ll keep having to learn to work with it, there are few new Instagram additions that are sure to get you excited and to help you grow your following!
The first big announcement you probably saw pop up on your phone that last time you logged in. Instagram bio’s now accept hashtags and handles. This will make finding your profile a whole lot easier. Add some relevant hashtags to your description (remember to keep the number of uses low, so you show up), and people will stumble upon you as they search that hashtag.
Do you have multiple Instagram accounts? Or have you switched from an old handle to a new one? Go ahead and add the new handle to your bio and followers can quickly head over to your new account and follow you there. If you link to an account you don’t own, the owner will be asked if they want to link. If they choose not to link their account then the handle will stay in your description but it won’t be linked.
These small little changes are making big trails for brands on Instagram, but the latest announcement should have you even more excited. The new algorithm is no longer taking the content you are most likely to enjoy and throwing it at the top of your feed, even if it’s a week old, it’s keeping the newest post first, while still paying attention to the content you like the most. This stemmed from complaints of the feed automatically refreshing and seeing old content, now a “New Posts” button that will refresh the feed so you can see what’s new is in beta. This makes it so that you are always right where you left off in your feed and will only see the new content when you push the “New Posts” button.
These changes won’t give you the same results as Instagram did in the beginning, I’m afraid those dreams are long gone. But it’s a move in the right direction and shows that Instagram has heard your cries and is listening.
